The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control reports our statistics on our website because we feel that transparency is an important part of being a public agency. In addition, we want our communities to understand the realities that we face and the impact that our citizens can have on increasing adoptions and decreasing euthanasia. We are an “open admission” shelter for 47 cities and the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. “Open admission” means that we receive all animals from the areas that we serve regardless of age, health, or temperament.
As you review these reports, please keep in mind that although the Department of Animal Care and Control has made great strides in recent years, we continue to work towards improving our programs and services. There is still a tremendous amount of work for us to do for the animals and we cannot do it alone. We rely heavily on our adoption partners, foster parents and volunteers. But most importantly, we rely on you, the community to help us achieve our goals. Department of Animal Care and Control encourages you to spay/neuter your pets, purchase a license, microchip, provide a forever home and come to any one of our animal care centers to adopt your next pet.
Please note that the County of Los Angeles operates on a fiscal year basis, which runs from July 1 until June 30 of the following year. All of the statistics contained in these reports also follow the fiscal year timeline.
